Soseki composed this haiku in the first haiku gathering of the year in Shikian in the afternoon of 3rd January,1896. It won the highest mark on that day. At a later date, Soseki put it down to his calligraphy handwriting and gave it to Enka Mori in Enka’s house in the same way that Shiki had done.
